Note-to-self: public website/server certificate quick check.

Today my ESET Endpoint Security blocked my browser for what I know is (sorry, should be) a legitimate magazine website…

Using other browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Tor, …) on my machine, I had the same issue…

Microsoft Edge

ESET Endpoint Security is reporting

“Website certificate revoked

The certificate used by this server has been marked as untrustworthy and the connection is not safe

Try connecting again later or from a different internet connection.
Access to it has been blocked.

Tor

Using another pc or smartphone (not using ESET) … I was able to connect.

So what’s going on?

When you look up the Eset message (“Website Certificate Revoked” eset), you’ll probably land on the ESET forums or knowledge base, … seems to be a pretty popular topic.

ESET explains

“This warning is displayed when your ESET product detects that the security certificate for a website is revoked.

ESET cannot resolve the issue because only the owner of a domain can renew their security certificate. You cannot choose to continue to the site using the insecure certificate.”

How do you double check this information?

The ESET forums point to a very interesting and eays to use tool: SSLTest at SSLLabs.com

Open: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/index.html

Then you can enter the URL of the website you want to visit or check…

Depending the status of the website (good…or bad), it will take a few seconds… to minutes… to scan the website and show the quality of the certificate.

In this case, it’s fairly clear why the website was blocked:

Just for your reference if you would check a website like: https://docs.microsoft.com, you’ll get A+ (that’s the other end of the scale..)

The grading results in a score from A (top), (B) good, (C) average .. to (F) big fail lowest score …

So, it’s a very handy and free tool to check your website for issues.

Why are these websites not blocked by other tools or browsers?

First of all, check if you have an anti-virus or antimalware tool that checks the URL.

Because other browsers, apps or URL filters will not always check for the CRL (the certificate revocation list, containing certificates that are no longer valid…).

Or the CRL is not updated or and old CRL is cached. The ESET KB article mentioned, explains how to clear the CRL cache on your system.

Other interesting tools

The website (or mail) certificate is just one of the security indicators …
If you want to check the reputation of your URL, domain, website, mail system, DNS, … there are some more interesting tools you should have at hand, like https://mxtoolbox.com/NetworkTools.aspx.

Conclusion

This situation show how easy it is to land on a website using revoked or unverified certificates…

Make sure to use a decent anti-malware and anti-virus tool. It’s worth to spend a small bit of money to protect your systems.

And if you combine it with some free tools to check the health of (your) websites and systems… you can achieve a decent level of security without spending a lot of money.

Ever got in a situation where you as AD domain admin were blocked from deleting items?

Or did you ever receive an “Access denied” when you tried to delete items from AD, even with full admin rights?

Then you better check if AD has the “protect from accidental deletion” activated on the object, container or OU…

In case you want to check a larger collection of items for this setting, it quickly becomes complicated.

This article helps you to get an overview by using Powershell, and an export of the impacted items to a CSV file.

As explained by : James ONeill (Windows Server 2008 Protection from Accidental Deletion)

“The functionality to prevent accidental deletion is not based on a new attribute in Active Directory.  It is enabled by ticking a check box on the Object tab of the particular object you wish to protect.  The Object tab is only visible when the Advanced Features option is selected from the View menu of Active Directory Users and Computers. When the tick box is checked the permissions on the object are changed. A “Deny” permission is created which stops deletion of the object.  “

Other symptoms

When you try to stop the run of the MIM MA you get an error.

Root cause

The option “run the management agent in a separate process” is activated.

Resolution

Uncheck the option “Run this management agent in a separate process” from the “Configure extensions” item in the management agent properties.

Using Powershell to generate eventviewer statistics and event exports

During FIM health checks we need to have a good overview of the event viewer on the FIM Servers.
In almost any case the event viewer is a good measure of the server’s health.

The more red and yellow you see, the more errors and warnings, the more work you’ll have to get your server in a healthy state.

First goal is to have a general temperature of the health.
Second goal is to have the details to fix the issues.

I’ve created a Powershell to analyse the event viewer logs.

In short, the Powerscript below is a modular script that offers following functions:

  • display the event log properties
  • analyse number of events per category
  • analyse number of events per severity
  • overview of error events with source, severity and sample message
  • detailed list of last event per eventID

You can configure the script:

  • choice of event logs
  • history length (period of events to report on)
  • enable/disable logging
  • enable/disable result export to file

 

Before you start

  • validate your script execution policy
  • copy the script to a separate folder where you can execute the script
  • validate the script parameters

Script configuration parameters

  • $enableLogging
    • $TRUE = create a transcript of the script during run (does not work in ISE)
    • $FALSE = do not create a verbose log
  • $ExportEnabled
    • $FALSE = do not export the result to file
    • $TRUE = export the results, statistics and event details to file
  • $EventLogList
    • Default: ‘System’,’Application’,’Setup’,’Forefront Identity Manager’,’Forefront Identity Manager Management Agent’
  • $startdate
    • Defines from which point in time the event logs must be analysed
    • HINT: on a system with a large size of event logs, it’s advised to limit the history to x days or x weeks. A large volume event log will impact the usage of script memory.
